HPPSC Scientific Officer (NDPS) Syllabus 2026 – English Details
The Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission has released the subject syllabus for the Descriptive Subject Aptitude Test connected with recruitment to the post of Scientific Officer (NDPS), Group-B, in the Directorate of Forensic Services, Home Department, Himachal Pradesh. The update was displayed through the Commission's official What's New section on 15 September 2026. It is important to understand that this is an examination-syllabus update for candidates associated with the earlier recruitment process. It does not open a new application window, extend the old application dates or invite a fresh fee payment.
Exam pattern
The Descriptive Subject Aptitude Test is a three-hour examination carrying a maximum of 120 marks. The syllabus is divided into two parts of 60 marks each. Part I covers Units I to VI, while Part II covers Units VII to XII. Since the test is descriptive, candidates should prepare to explain scientific concepts, analytical procedures, evidentiary principles and legal or laboratory applications in a structured written form. Merely memorising one-line facts may not be sufficient. Answers should use correct technical terminology, logical headings, relevant examples and, where useful, labelled diagrams or procedural flow.
Part I syllabus
Unit I introduces Forensic Science, its nature, scope, history, development, organisations and fundamental principles. It includes Locard's Exchange Principle, comparison, probability, individualisation, natural variation and continuous change. Candidates should understand the responsibilities of forensic experts, types of physical and trace evidence, evidence collection standards and the importance of accepted scientific standards.
Unit II concerns Crime Scene Management. Major themes include securing a scene, locating and documenting material, collection and packaging, chain of custody, photography, videography, sketching, search methods and reconstruction. Bloodstain pattern analysis and road-accident reconstruction are also important. Candidates should be able to connect scientific observations with a defensible reconstruction and written report.
Unit III covers dactylography and identification. Preparation should include fingerprint formation, patterns, classification systems, recording and development methods, comparison of ridge characteristics, digital transmission, NAFIS and biometric techniques such as face, iris and hand-geometry identification.
Unit IV covers instrumental methods. The official syllabus lists microscopy, atomic and molecular spectroscopy, X-ray techniques, electrophoresis and chromatography. Candidates should revise the working principles, components, applications, limitations and interpretation of results for major techniques such as UV-Visible spectroscopy, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, atomic absorption, ICP-MS, TLC, HPTLC and HPLC.
Unit V deals with chemometrics and quality management. Topics include averages, variance, standard deviation, tests of significance, analysis of variance, multivariate analysis and quality systems. Laboratory accreditation, ISO/IEC 17025, quality assurance, calibration, proficiency testing, audits, measurement uncertainty, detection limits and method validation deserve focused revision.
Unit VI covers laboratory information systems, scientific report writing, expert evidence and research methodology. It also refers to relevant legal frameworks, including the current criminal laws and statutes connected with electronic evidence, child protection, narcotic substances and motor vehicles. Candidates should study research design, sampling, data interpretation, literature review, ethical reporting and prevention of plagiarism.
Part II syllabus
Unit VII includes physical, inorganic and organic chemistry, stereochemistry, reactions and important biomolecules. Unit VIII focuses on narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, their sources, chemistry, pharmacological action, metabolism, sampling, extraction, identification and legislative control. It includes drugs of abuse, plant-based narcotics, precursor chemicals, clandestine laboratories and new psychoactive substances.
Unit IX is Forensic Chemistry. Its coverage includes preliminary and confirmatory testing, unknown-substance examination, titrimetric analysis, corrosive chemicals, trap-case materials, arson residues, petroleum products, illicit liquor and alcohol measurement. Unit X covers analytical chemistry and biochemical analysis, including accuracy, precision, errors, sample preparation, safe handling, good laboratory practice, method validation, buffers and centrifugation.
Unit XI deals with extraction and separation. Candidates should understand liquid-liquid extraction, partition behaviour, solid-phase extraction, chromatography and advanced coupled techniques such as GC-MS and LC-MS. Extraction of drugs and poisons from viscera, blood, urine, hair and saliva is especially relevant. Unit XII covers forensic pharmacology, including pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, drug half-life, metabolites, toxicity studies and the drug-development process.
Preparation strategy
Start by printing or saving the official PDF and creating a twelve-unit checklist. Divide preparation time equally between concept revision and descriptive answer writing. Prepare short definitions, five-mark notes, longer analytical answers and comparison tables for each unit. Practise explaining the principle, instrumentation, procedure, result interpretation, advantages, limitations and forensic application of every major technique. Include laws and quality standards in weekly revision.
Attempt three-hour practice papers because time management is central to a descriptive examination. Reserve the final minutes for checking scientific terms, units and diagrams. Use standard postgraduate textbooks, laboratory manuals and current statutory provisions rather than relying only on brief summaries. परीक्षा पैटर्न

Part I की तैयारी
Unit I में Forensic Science की परिभाषा, इतिहास, scope, organisations और मुख्य principles शामिल हैं। Evidence के प्रकार, collection और preservation की standard procedure तथा forensic expert की जिम्मेदारियां समझना जरूरी है। Unit II में crime scene को secure करना, photography, videography, sketching, evidence packaging, chain of custody, reconstruction, bloodstain pattern और road accident reconstruction शामिल हैं।
Unit III fingerprints और biometrics से संबंधित है। Fingerprint patterns, ridge characteristics, classification systems, development methods, comparison, NAFIS और biometric identification तैयार करें। Unit IV में microscopy, spectroscopy, X-ray methods, electrophoresis और chromatography जैसे instrumental methods हैं। हर instrument का principle, basic components, forensic use और limitation नोट करें।

Part II की तैयारी
Unit VII में organic, inorganic तथा physical chemistry और biomolecules शामिल हैं। Unit VIII narcotic drugs और psychotropic substances पर केंद्रित है। Drugs की पहचान, chemistry, extraction, metabolism, plant sources, designer substances, precursor chemicals, clandestine laboratories और संबंधित legal provisions की तैयारी करें।
Unit IX Forensic Chemistry का भाग है। इसमें unknown substances, volumetric methods, corrosive chemicals, trap cases, arson, petroleum products, illicit liquor और alcohol analysis आते हैं। Unit X में analytical chemistry, errors, accuracy, precision, sample preparation, laboratory practices, buffers तथा centrifugation शामिल हैं।
Unit XI extraction और separation techniques से संबंधित है। Liquid-liquid extraction, solid-phase extraction, chromatography, GC-MS, LC-MS और biological samples से drugs या poisons निकालने की विधियों को अच्छी तरह समझें। Unit XII Forensic Pharmacology में absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, half-life, metabolites, toxicity studies और drug development का अध्ययन करना होगा।
कैसे तैयारी करें
Official syllabus PDF के अनुसार बारह units की checklist बनाएं। प्रत्येक दिन एक technical topic की theory पढ़ने के बाद उसी पर descriptive answer लिखें। Instruments के लिए principle, construction, working, application और limitation की fixed answer structure तैयार करें। Narcotic substances और forensic chemistry के लिए classification tables बनाएं। Laws, ISO standards और analytical calculations की weekly revision करें।
तीन घंटे का full-length practice paper नियमित रूप से हल करें। उत्तरों में headings, छोटे paragraphs, comparison tables और आवश्यक diagrams का उपयोग करें। परीक्षा की तारीख अभी घोषित नहीं हुई है, इसलिए केवल official HPPSC website पर आने वाले exam schedule, admit card और press note को final मानें। किसी unofficial message के आधार पर दोबारा form या fee submit न करें।
